Most airlines allow you a free lap child ticket. I have put together a list of things that have helped me to fly with my baby that made the trip a little easier on everyone. With the toys, as a tip make sure to bring ONE toy out at a time so your baby is not board with ALL of them at once.
I snagged a cheap one-way flight on Frontier to meet one of my best friends in Reno, NV to take a road trip with one of my besties! I also decided to travel with our youngest because lap children are free, he is still nursing a little off an on (he was 15 months at the time), AND I AM CRAZY!😂 I want to do an “all-encompassing” post where I share photos from our adventure.
Then I will share a couple specific posts ( Gear to get for your flight with your baby, Gear to get for your road trip with your baby, Our first Airbnb experience, Wild Palms Hotel review, Family foodie adventure in Santa Cruz: Earth Belly , Family Foodie adventure in Las Cruces: Andele”s dog house, and I will come back and link to the different posts 😚.)
So we traveled 1796 miles in 4 days with 2 adults and 2 kiddos!
😻🙀 Our plane got in late and I needed to situate all of our stuff as soon as I got off the plane and I HAD TO PEE which was interesting with a baby and a TON of stuff that goes along with a baby for a road trip (which if it wasn’t for my baby gear I would not have made it out of the bathroom with my sanity intact! 😂👐 Then I went down the elevator to meet up with Davielle.
MAMA NEEEEEEDS COFFEE!
After I squeezed the crap out of Davielle and crying after not seeing her for 7 years (she lived on Hawaii, which we never had enough money to fly out there as a family at the time) and to reward myself for making it through the craziness of packing, prepping my family for the 4 days I would be gone, flying solo with a baby… mama was ready for some coffee! So we stopped at Coffeebar in Reno.
We drove to Trukee, California
where her family was camping the week before for Father’s day. We stopped and I took some family photos of them among the GIANT GORGEOUS pine trees. Not going to lie wish I had all my peeps to photograph with me and was a little jealous of the gorgeous light (maybe next time). But Davielle got a couple super cute ones of little dude and me as well!
Let it BURN!!
That last photo CRACKS me up! Isaac ended up playing the harmonica and I was so excited to get a video of him doing that and as I swiped up my phone FLEW INTO THE FIRE! As Davielle and I were scrambling around trying to get it out of the fire pit Charlie nonchalantly said “let it burn” thinking it was a hot dog! 😂😂😂 He put it in their cooler for a bit once it cooled down and it totally worked the remainder of the trip!!
Wild Palms Hotel
We drove through the night to get to Wild Palms Hotel; a Sunnyvale Boutique Hotel and it was totally worth it to get there. The bed was so comfy and the interior design was AMAZING. I will do a separate post on this amazing hotel and will link back here.
We decided to try to go down the PCH (along the coast of California, PS DON’T DO IT! I will tell you more in a bit). As we were driving we stopped at Earth Belly in Santa Cruz (will link to later) and it was AMAZING! THEN we saw this amazing fruit stand where we loaded up on fruit to make a fruit salad later the next day.
So the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)…
is gorgeous but extremely winding! I was SUPER NAUSEOUS! We didn’t realize the northern part of California was cliffs and not beaches (you live and learn!!). So a lot of the time we were super close to the cliff edge! 😣😖😵😱😳
We made a short pitstop at Big Sur Lodge to grab some coffee to continue our trip. Next, go around I would LOVE to stay here! It was GORGEOUS, chilly, surrounded by huge amazing trees!
THE ROAD ENDS!!
THEN around 10 pm after HOURS of being on this road, the road ENDED! NOT A DETOUR BUT ENDED!! But thank God, where we stopped, there was a gas station that had a slip of paper of how to cut through the mountains to get back to a “normal highway”. Well, that ended up being even WORSE! LITERALLY EVERY 10 FEET there was a turn. And I got super car sick! 😷 THANK GOD we had some Whole foods paper sacks in the car that I used at one point and let’s just say that I left it on the mountain! It was seriously the most intense moment of my life! I learned some deep and important life lessons (I will be loading my thoughts to IGTV soon)
We raced through Arizona
Because of all that craziness with PCH it put us behind schedule so we RACED THROUGH Arizona which is sad because we missed Joshua Tree, Salvation Mountain…. etc etc etc… we will be redoing our trip one of these days and take MUCH MORE time and avoid the PCH… although maybe just go to Big Sur and then get off! 😂😂😂 BUT I made us pull over in the desert during sunset and grab those beautiful desert sunset photos! 😍😍😍
Airbnb in Las Cruces
We FINALLY got to this amazing Airbnb I reserved in Las Cruces (I think we got there at 5 am😨😰😱😳😵) BUT it was totally worth it! It was a renovated shipping container that gave both of us BIG DREAMS of doing the same thing in the Austin area! 😱😍 I will be doing a full review and link to it later, until then just know it was CRAZY COOL!)
New Mexican food is delish!
While in Las Cruces the Airbnb host suggested Andele’s Dog House. I have a pretty refined Tex Mex pallette so😂😂 “Mexican food” is a FAVORITE of mine and has to be on point or it is disgusting! There is a pretty fine line! And this place KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK! It had New Mexico flair to it which was so yummy! I will write more about this place in a separate post, make sure to check it out!
Until next time!
So after that, we drove straight through the tip of Texas into Austin to get home! It was definitely worth EVERY MOMENT and something I have wanted to do with her FOREVER! AND I hope we get to do another trip next summer, until then I will reminisce and be thankful for this fun, crazy life changing adventure!
How to visit Magnolia Table with kids!
So my Mom invited us to go to visit Magnolia Table with our kids in Waco. HOW could I refuse!? 😲 So we packed up (we only live about an hour and a half away!) and went to visit the new restaurant by Chip and Joanna Gaines’ new restaurant Magnolia Table. I was a little nervous taking the kiddos thinking it was going to be this farmhouse hipster fest with people giving me the side eye at my kids.😒 Not one side eye was given and the kids LOVED it!
CHECK IN with the hostess and get a pager so that you don’t waste time. THEN go check out the “take away” area that has snacks, little gift shop type things, beverages etc. Basically to tide you over while you wait or if you happen to go on a REALLY busy day you could just grab something from here.
While you wait…
It will probably be about an hour wait if you are lucky. We went during the week so that probably helped with the wait. So after checking out the “Take Away” area if you still aren’t being seated, you could have the kids take a photo with Chip and Joanna Gaines’ hands. Then go to the left of the building and there is a beautiful covered area you can sit and wait in the shade. For some reason we didn’t realize this was available till afterwards, so make sure you take advantage of that!
Inside is gorgeous!
There is a full coffee shop and the decor is PERFECTION which did you expect anything less??? You could see Joanna’s design influence throughout the whole restaurant and attention to even the smallest details! If you are going to visit Magnolia Table with kids make sure to ask for the cute coloring sheets including colored pencils!😍😍😍
They had water carafes for the tables with their logo on them, which is perfect as I ALWAYS order a drink (usually a Sprite) with a water in case the server gets busy but I am crazy thirsty! They also had leather pouches for you to put your phone in so you could focus and pay attention to the people you are eating with, BRILLIANT! Just don’t forget your phone! 🙊😂
“Daniel” was the best server ever!
So he actually had a different name but I can’t remember what it was. 😬 He said he was new and they didn’t have a name tag for him yet. BUT he was awesome, he had us cracking up the whole time and was very attentive! Those last few photos he said if he takes off his glasses he looks like Super Man (yeah I see that! 🤗😂)
The food was SUPER YUMMY!
I was a little nervous that we wouldn’t find anything on the menu that the kiddos would like but there were quite a few options! Bella and I ended up getting the Chip sandwich which had a scrambled egg on a croissant.
It was super filling as it came with a side of homemade tater tots. We had them as an appetizer too not realizing they were included with the meal but Isaac loved them so that worked out PERFECT!
They do have a kids menu that I think most kids will go for, our youngest daughter is gluten intolerant so we modified something from the kid’s menu. If you are going to visit Magnolia Table with kids AND toddlers, I recommend bringing some snacks you know they will like just in case yours is like mine. One day he likes tater tots the next day wants nothing to do with them 🙄😂
Also GREAT coffee!
The coffee was much needed to keep up with my little man for the day! And these adorable mugs!?😍😍😍 Then check out the sugar packet!? 😍😍😍 I mean the details were amazing, inspiring and adorable!
Dessert was amazing!
So the kid’s menu includes this little box of two cookies. Which was adorable! BUT with our gluten-free kiddo, she couldn’t eat them so we asked if they had a substitute and our waiter brought over a gluten-free peanut butter cookie. Also, these amazing caramels were inside the check. 😱😍😍😍
WE HAD to visit Magnolia Market too DUH!
Their spring display was up and it was ADORABLE! If you don’t know they change out products and displays with each season. So if you go during one season they will have different beautiful displays for the next season.
This art piece in particular almost made me cry it was such a beautiful reminder… “perhaps this is the moment for which you were created” – Esther 4: 14
Then there was this one… 😭😭😭… an older woman watched as I set up this photo and said “there you go mama that is what it is all about right there”. TIME PLEASE SLOW DOWN!
We then got tea at the Alabama Sweet Tea Company
Yes, $8 is a lot to pay for a sweet tea… BUT you get to keep the mason jar and straw which is ADORABLE and will probably be used for iced coffee this summer as well! And if you look closely at the last photo Bella was giving the tea guy some pretty big smiles! 😂😍😊
DON’T FORGET to play on the green…
After you go to the main store there is a giant green lawn where they have yard games for the kids to play like cornhole (yes that is the awkward name of the game 😂!) and ton of balls. That day a slight “cold front” blew in so it was PERFECT weather for the kids to play.
A kid was playing with some friends and kicked a ball towards Isaac and I kicked it away as it came barreling towards him. And the kid RUDELY said, “Don’t kick my ball!” 😡 Ummm then I said, ” You were going to hit my baby!” Luckily his Mom saw this and asked him to apologize. Otherwise, someone might have “accidentally” tripped on my foot as he ran by 😜😂😆
So for the sake of other people’s kids too please pay attention to your kids while sipping your $8 ice tea 😂! And thank you random Mom for paying attention! BRAVO!
Check out the garden shed past the lawn to the right!
I didn’t do my “typical” outfit planning with the girls to make sure they were “cute” and “wall prints” ready 🤓🙈😂. But that is ok they were still adorable and beautiful! BUT this little area would be an amazing area for photos! AND in the winter they have the WORLD’S most adorable Santa set up!
Also in the little garden shed they have a little more shopping for “garden accesories” and little fairy garden additions it is a really cute little addition.
