Most airlines allow you a free lap child ticket. I have put together a list of things that have helped me to fly with my baby that made the trip a little easier on everyone. With the toys, as a tip make sure to bring ONE toy out at a time so your baby is not board with ALL of them at once.
I snagged a cheap one-way flight on Frontier to meet one of my best friends in Reno, NV to take a road trip with one of my besties! I also decided to travel with our youngest because lap children are free, he is still nursing a little off an on (he was 15 months at the time), AND I AM CRAZY!😂 I want to do an “all-encompassing” post where I share photos from our adventure.
Then I will share a couple specific posts ( Gear to get for your flight with your baby, Gear to get for your road trip with your baby, Our first Airbnb experience, Wild Palms Hotel review, Family foodie adventure in Santa Cruz: Earth Belly , Family Foodie adventure in Las Cruces: Andele”s dog house, and I will come back and link to the different posts 😚.)
So we traveled 1796 miles in 4 days with 2 adults and 2 kiddos!
😻🙀 Our plane got in late and I needed to situate all of our stuff as soon as I got off the plane and I HAD TO PEE which was interesting with a baby and a TON of stuff that goes along with a baby for a road trip (which if it wasn’t for my baby gear I would not have made it out of the bathroom with my sanity intact! 😂👐 Then I went down the elevator to meet up with Davielle.
MAMA NEEEEEEDS COFFEE!
After I squeezed the crap out of Davielle and crying after not seeing her for 7 years (she lived on Hawaii, which we never had enough money to fly out there as a family at the time) and to reward myself for making it through the craziness of packing, prepping my family for the 4 days I would be gone, flying solo with a baby… mama was ready for some coffee! So we stopped at Coffeebar in Reno.
We drove to Trukee, California
where her family was camping the week before for Father’s day. We stopped and I took some family photos of them among the GIANT GORGEOUS pine trees. Not going to lie wish I had all my peeps to photograph with me and was a little jealous of the gorgeous light (maybe next time). But Davielle got a couple super cute ones of little dude and me as well!
Let it BURN!!
That last photo CRACKS me up! Isaac ended up playing the harmonica and I was so excited to get a video of him doing that and as I swiped up my phone FLEW INTO THE FIRE! As Davielle and I were scrambling around trying to get it out of the fire pit Charlie nonchalantly said “let it burn” thinking it was a hot dog! 😂😂😂 He put it in their cooler for a bit once it cooled down and it totally worked the remainder of the trip!!
Wild Palms Hotel
We drove through the night to get to Wild Palms Hotel; a Sunnyvale Boutique Hotel and it was totally worth it to get there. The bed was so comfy and the interior design was AMAZING. I will do a separate post on this amazing hotel and will link back here.
We decided to try to go down the PCH (along the coast of California, PS DON’T DO IT! I will tell you more in a bit). As we were driving we stopped at Earth Belly in Santa Cruz (will link to later) and it was AMAZING! THEN we saw this amazing fruit stand where we loaded up on fruit to make a fruit salad later the next day.
So the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)…
is gorgeous but extremely winding! I was SUPER NAUSEOUS! We didn’t realize the northern part of California was cliffs and not beaches (you live and learn!!). So a lot of the time we were super close to the cliff edge! 😣😖😵😱😳
We made a short pitstop at Big Sur Lodge to grab some coffee to continue our trip. Next, go around I would LOVE to stay here! It was GORGEOUS, chilly, surrounded by huge amazing trees!
THE ROAD ENDS!!
THEN around 10 pm after HOURS of being on this road, the road ENDED! NOT A DETOUR BUT ENDED!! But thank God, where we stopped, there was a gas station that had a slip of paper of how to cut through the mountains to get back to a “normal highway”. Well, that ended up being even WORSE! LITERALLY EVERY 10 FEET there was a turn. And I got super car sick! 😷 THANK GOD we had some Whole foods paper sacks in the car that I used at one point and let’s just say that I left it on the mountain! It was seriously the most intense moment of my life! I learned some deep and important life lessons (I will be loading my thoughts to IGTV soon)
We raced through Arizona
Because of all that craziness with PCH it put us behind schedule so we RACED THROUGH Arizona which is sad because we missed Joshua Tree, Salvation Mountain…. etc etc etc… we will be redoing our trip one of these days and take MUCH MORE time and avoid the PCH… although maybe just go to Big Sur and then get off! 😂😂😂 BUT I made us pull over in the desert during sunset and grab those beautiful desert sunset photos! 😍😍😍
Airbnb in Las Cruces
We FINALLY got to this amazing Airbnb I reserved in Las Cruces (I think we got there at 5 am😨😰😱😳😵) BUT it was totally worth it! It was a renovated shipping container that gave both of us BIG DREAMS of doing the same thing in the Austin area! 😱😍 I will be doing a full review and link to it later, until then just know it was CRAZY COOL!)
New Mexican food is delish!
While in Las Cruces the Airbnb host suggested Andele’s Dog House. I have a pretty refined Tex Mex pallette so😂😂 “Mexican food” is a FAVORITE of mine and has to be on point or it is disgusting! There is a pretty fine line! And this place KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK! It had New Mexico flair to it which was so yummy! I will write more about this place in a separate post, make sure to check it out!
Until next time!
So after that, we drove straight through the tip of Texas into Austin to get home! It was definitely worth EVERY MOMENT and something I have wanted to do with her FOREVER! AND I hope we get to do another trip next summer, until then I will reminisce and be thankful for this fun, crazy life changing adventure!
Hillside Farmacy History…
Hillside Farmacy resides in a building owned by one of the oldest standing African American East Austin residents. In the 50’s, pharmacist Doc Young & his family operated Hillside Drugstore. The drugstore closed in the 70’s and the deteriorating building was lovingly restored by the Hillside Farmacy team including re-installing a fountain soda system. They continue the families vision to keep the community healthy, just now, it is in the form of good local farm food.
Hillside Farmacy is ADORABLE!
Ok so let’s start off with the fact that Hillside Farmacy is adorable! So many design touches that had me all heart eyes! 😍😍😍. It is a little “unassuming” from outside as they have plants blocking the view of the street if you sit outside which is nice! But once you get inside… WOW it is gorgeous!
Ask for coloring sheets!
If you do take your kiddos ask for the coloring sheets. They may have to dig a little like they did for us but it was worth it to have the color this adorable page. (shhhh don’t judge when I take a photo of a coloring sheet we don’t keep it 🙈🙊😂)
They also carry “goods”
They have spices, coffee, teas, cookbooks all tucked into these old apothecary type shelving units which adds so much charm to this Austin Restaurant!
Their sodas are refreshing and delicious!
So we tried the Pickpocket which had Strawberry, basil and balsamic. This one was everybody’s favorite! It was crisp and summery perfect for the super hot day in Austin!
Then we also tried the Tumeric which has a lemon, ginger, black pepper. I have been trying to drink Tumeric at least a couple times a month as it is REALLY good for inflammation (which I get around my knees). BUT your kids probably won’t like it. It is definitely an acquired taste which I loved but even my friend Kathleen was not a fan. So unless you are more adventurous I would stick to the Pickpocket!
For dinner, we started with…
Malt Vinegar fries with a house made aioli, malt vinegar gastrique, smoked salt & pepper. The kiddos loved these! Little Mr., in particular, ate most of them! And I would say this restaurant at night is a little “fancier” than most so I made sure to bring little dudes pacifier and invited my sweet friend Kathleen to talk with since Daniel couldn’t come but also to be an extra set of hands for that wiggle worm while I tried to get good photos. THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH KATHLEEN YOU WERE A LIFE SAVER! (She didn’t really want her photo taken but how could I not include that gorgeous lady!? 😍😚😘 I love her sooooo much she is one of the most amazing people I know!)
Then we had the Mac and Cheese with taleggio, aged white cheddar, and breadcrumbs. SO let me say this is NOT the blue box kind of mac and cheese. So at first bite, my oldest said: “where is the cheese?” I quickly tried to hush her, kids don’t realize how blunt they are being sometimes. So it isn’t “super” cheesy but it is delicious! Kathleen and I ended up eating most of it which was fine with me!
Our entrees were delicious!
Kathleen and I split the Roasted Chicken with a side of more fries (did we tell you we liked the fries?). The only thing I regret is not getting our own plates because the chicken was so succulent!
The girls split a burger with…..you guessed it fries. The burger is a Bastrop Texas grass-fed beef, with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickled, cucumber, 77 sauce. They scarfed it down! (we took off the bun for Libby as she is gluten intolerant)
Sooooo I went back….
So for a couple reasons one was because by the end of our meal as you can see it started getting dark so these photos were MASTERFULLY lite by Kathleen holding my cell phone over the plate as I took the photo 🙈😂… that is skills there am I right!? 😂😂 AGAIN THANK YOU KATHLEEN! 😘😘😘 So I wanted to go back during the day when the light was cascading in through it it’s most glorious way through all the windows throughout the restaurant.
AND sometimes as moms, we need a BREAK! So my sister in law was watching my kiddos as I was doing a separate photo shoot. After the photo shoot, I ran back to the restaurant to capture more photos which are truly food blog eye candy! Doesn’t that burger look so much better!? I also added avocado and bacon! 😍😍😍😍 (that previous burger is somewhat a reflection of the way I felt that night, overwhelmed and a little “deflated” 😂😂😂)
I also treated myself to some coffee!
I LOVE coffee so much so that we have our own coffee company (more on that another time). So I LOVE to try coffee at different places. in fact I plan on making an “AUSTIN Coffee shop guide” here pretty soon! Needless to say drinking a cup of coffee by myself without someone screaming at someone else, or chattering (which I am trying to have more patience for as I know they won’t always want to talk so I try to cherish it but sometimes you want to just drink your coffee in peace am I right!? 😂🙈) while reading a beautiful cookbook was so needed and restorative!
The waiter was FANTASTIC!
I mean how can you not be wearing this chicken apron!? He was funny, helpful, and allowed me room to take my time to take photos and even took some of me (which sir, you did a FABULOUS JOB! THANK YOU SO MUCH!)
